So, I’m back. The break was unintentional but the holiday season have been a little crazier than I thought it would be and with a new job, it has just been difficult to find time to blog. But anyway, here I am and I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas with family, friends and food – I know I’m pretty much about to go into a sugar/food coma!

I thought about what I wanted to write about today and although I don’t want a negative-ish post in the holiday season, I am thinking of it as decluttering part of my stash of products I never use before the new year. Plus, among the abundance of Top of – lists that fill our computer screens, here’s a little look into what didn’t work so well. So, here we go.

Kiehl's Superbly Efficient Anti-Perspirant & Deodorant Cream, Bumble and Bumble Defrizz, MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Comfort, Giorgio Armani High Precision Retouch Concealer in 3.5, MAC Mineralize Eye Shadow in Togetherness & Sleek Pout Paint in Milkshake

Kiehl’s Superbly Efficient Anti-Perspirant & Deodorant Cream: I am not a fan of using anti-perspirants on a regular basis  – I’m not gross, I just prefer to use only deodorant on a daily basis. That being said, I do like to have an anti-perspirant on hand for those extremely hot summer days or special nights when you don’t want to take the chance of sweating at all. I purchased this after reading many many rave reviews that said this product keeps the pits dry like no other. As far as I’m concerned, that couldn’t be farther from my experience. The product itself is a white cream that spreads out easily and the top of the tube is slightly domed in a way that it can be used to apply the cream so I never used my fingers for application. It does deodorize well and doesn’t stain the clothes but unfortunately, fails to live up to its anti-perspirant claims. The worst part? The product never dries down! My pits just stay wet and uncomfortable, making them feel sweaty even when they’re not. It pretty much provides the exact opposite feeling than it’s supposed to. It’s getting tossed.

Bumble and Bumble Defrizz: This is a smoothing serum that relies heavily on silicones to smooth down the hair. There are literally 2 ingredients in this serum: cyclopentasiloxane and dimethicone, and they are both essentially silicones. It’s a very thick liquid and can be used in dry or wet hair. I do find that it smooths down my hair when I use it in wet hair but it weighs down my hair sooo much that I feel like I need to wash my hair within the hour. When used on dry hair, it still weighs down the hair, though not as much but it performs poorly when it comes to smoothing down the frizzies. If you have thicker hair, this may work for you but if you’re working with fine hair, stay far far away.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Comfort: This was a purchase made when I first discovered the makeup world and thought MAC’s Skinfinishes were the shit. And while some may be, this is not one of them. While I enjoy the texture of this product, my biggest concern with it is the colour. It’s waaaay too orange to be used as a bronzer and way to brown to be a blush. I usually try pairing it with another blush for a more bronzed look but get it to look natural requires so much effort that I pretty much never ever use it.

Sleek Pout Paint in Milkshake: This is a cheaper version of OCC Lip Tars and I do feel like cheaper is the operative word here. It is a highly pigmented liquid lipstick that can be mixed with other shades to create your own colours. I did find that this was a little more hydrating than the OCC Lip Tars but the Lip Tars lasted a little longer on the lips. However, no matter how I store this, the product ends up separating and when I go to use it, I get a huge glob of clear, oily liquid followed by a thick glob of patchy pigment. The separation of the product can actually be seen in the picture below (the swatch included in the post shows the shade of the product once it’s been mixed in together). It’s just not worth the hassle of having to sit there mixing up the product each time you want to use it.

MAC Mineralize Eye Shadow in Togetherness: Although I’m mentioning the Togetherness shade in particular, my feelings about this shadow extend to the entire Minralize Eye Shadow range. I just find them too sheer and because of that particular property, never reach for them. I know when used wet, they do have much more intense pigmentation but let’s face it, that’s not happening. Every Mineralize Eye shadow I own basically just sits there but this Togetherness is probably one of my least used ones since the shades are so cool and unflattering on me.

Giorgio Armani High Precision Retouch Concealer in 3.5: I know a lot of people love this concealer and the concealer itself is actually pretty good. The shade match? Not so much. I was suckered into this in bad store lighting when the sales person at Armani managed to convince me that it matched my skin. It’s too light for my face and pulls a little grey under my eyes so it’s essentially useless. I try to use it underneath my foundation but it does tend to move so it’s not the best way of using the product. I have been using it lately on blemishes with another concealer that matches my skin layered on top and have been having a bit more luck with that method. Regardless, if you’re around NC 30 – 35 range, there really isn’t a good match for your skin in Armani’s bases and concealers so save your money.

What are some of the products you were disappointed with this year? The Armani Concealer particularly irks me because of how expensive it was. Oh well. You live, you learn I suppose.
