Tarte’s Fall 2014 collection has already launched at Sephora and their Rainforest After Dark Colored Clay and Eye & Cheek Palette, inspired by the hues of the rainforest at dusk, is a beauty! In packaging similar to last year’s Aqualilies palette, Rainforest After Dark comes with a highlighter, bronzer, blush and six eyeshadows. Not bad for $46 CAD!

The palette comes in a sturdy, round plastic compact that has a pattern reminiscent of tree bark with a snake with a purple jeweled eye. The palette comes with 4g of highlighter and 4g of bronzer and 6g of blush (Tarte’s individual full size blushes are 5.6g) and 6g of eyeshadow. My only issue with the packaging is that the names are not printed on the palette itself, forcing me to keep the annoying plastic insert with the names on it.

I’m happy to report that unlike the Off the Cuff Blush Palette (see here for the detailed review), the Rainforest After Dark palette is made in USA as are the items in their regular line. The other notable thing is the products in this palette use “colored clay” rather than the “12-Hour Amazonian Clay”, which has been Tarte’s thing for the last few years. Whereas “Amazonian clay” comes from the Amazon River and adapts to the needs of the skin, “colored clay” comes from the mountains of Brazil and has colour correcting and oil absorbing properties. That being said, the blush in the palette still has same Amazon River design as the Amazonian clay blushes so perhaps it still has the regular Amazonian clay formula. After all, saying Rainforest After Dark Colored Clay Eye and Cheek Palette and 12-Hour Amazonian Clay Blush would be a bit of a mouthful.

Champagne is a golden shimmer-y highlight that looks almost white-ish against my skin. The powder is so soft to the touch that it might as well be a cream. It is a very intense highlight that requires a very gentle hand. It’s not the finest highlight I have ever seen and can emphasize pores if one is overzealous with it but when done right, it’s beautiful. This is a re-promote from the Aqualilies palette. The bronzer, as always with any Tarte palette, is the matte version of Park Ave Princess. I don’t have the full size of it but compared to the one included in the Off the Cuff palette, this one is noticeably cooler and has a drier feel (whether this is due to this palette being made in USA and the blush palette being made in China or the difference in formula and inclusion of “colored clay”, I can’t say). This bronzer would work well for light to medium skin. Unleashed is a pale tea rose pink. It’s very subtle on my skin and does warm up a little against olive skin, it would be beautiful on paler skintones. I think it this shade has a strong likelihood of going ashy on darker skintones though. In comparison, Dollface is significantly more blue and is much cooler. The blush performs well and lasts on my skin for around 8-10 hours with minimal fading, as most Tarte blushes do.

The eyeshadows in the palette are all pigmented, blend well and wear well on the eyes throughout the day. I haven’t tried any eyeshadows from Tarte prior to using this palette so I can’t speak to the consistency in quality across the line. The palette has a mix of cool and warm tones that work well together to create a variety of looks. Bare to Explore is a matte nude pink that’s a great base or blending colour. Make a Mauve is a cool tauped grey-ish purple with some shimmer. It’s not the softest of shadows but I had no trouble picking up the colour on the brush and depositing it on the eyelid. Plum Away with Me is a warm berry plum with very subtle shimmer – the shimmer is so subtle that it’s almost undetectable in the swatches below. This eyeshadow is very pigmented and has a very soft, blendable formula, although not as soft as the next eyeshadow. Up to No Gold is a warm metallic gold. This shade looks medium toned on my skin but on paler skin, it would pull more orange a la MAC Woodwinked. Actually, if MAC Goldmine is layered on top of MAC Woodwinked, the resulting shade is an exact dupe for Up to No Gold. The texture of this eyeshadow is almost similar to Champagne, the highlight shade – almost feels creamy to the touch. Tan-gled Up in You is a cool matte taupe brown. A great crease colour. Don’t Turn a Brown is a dark chocolate brown that isnt too cool or warm so it pairs well with everything. It has a drier texture, causing it to swatch patchy but it performs just fine when applied with a brush. This is also a good liner shade.

All in all, I think this palette is not only good value for the price but its performance makes it well worth the money. It has a good mix of warm and cool colours that would suit a wide variety of complexions without overwhelming you with options. Definitely a great palette to get the ball rolling on the fall collections!
