Giorgio Armani’s Kaleidoscope collection for Fall 2013 includes 6 new, limited edition shades of their renowned Eyes to Kill Intense eyeshadows. And what a beauty they all are. Despite wanting to purchase all of them, I painfully restricted myself to one that I thought was really unique and I couldn’t quite think of a dupe. Turns out, I was right since I wasn’t successful in finding a dupe in my collection.

Eyes to Kill Intense eyeshadows are essentially a pressed powder that comes packed in a glass pot and can be worn wet or dry. These Kaleidoscope iterations of the ETK Intense eyeshadows released with the Kaleidoscope collection seem more finely milled than those released previously, particularly compared to those released with last summer’s Acqua collection which had significantly chunkier shimmer. ETK Intense eyeshadows are known for their nuanced colours and the new shades are no exception.

Rose Popillia (30) is a smoked, pink plum with a multicoloured shimmer. It applies slightly cooler on the skin than it looks in the pot with a hint of grey. Depending on the lighting, it either looks like a grey-ed mauve or a plummy pink with a golden sheen. But it’s the shimmer that is the true star in this shade. The shimmer is so finely milled and multifaceted that in normal lighting, it just looks like a satin finish on the eyes but that when light hits it, it provides a beautiful, sophisticated shimmery effect without making it look like a unicorn threw up on your eyes. I have read on other blogs that this shade seemed sheer when applied dry – that was not my experience at all. It went on completely opaque in one swipe (although, if you’re interested in only the shimmer aspect of this shade, I find that it can be sheered out enough that you get just the shimmer without the colour when applied dry). When applied wet, the base colour seems to be a bit deeper but the finish and shimmer are not compromised in any way. As with the other shades of Eyes to Kill Intense, I can wear this shadow without creasing or fading for at least 9 hours (I didn’t get a chance to test it longer than that).

When I initially looked at Rose Popillia (30), I thought it could be similar to ETK Intense in Rock Sand (9), Oxidized Silver (27) or MAC Vex or Patina eyeshadows. Turns out this shade is more unique than I thought and I have nothing quite like it. Rock Sand (9) is a warm champagne shade and honestly, is really nothing like this shade at all. I have no clue why I felt the need to even compare it but oh, well. There it is. Oxidized Silver (270) is waaaaay darker, more purple. In terms of duping the shimmer and the colour, I suppose would be the closest shade would be Vex with it’s multicoloured duochrome. However, it’s much paler and has more white, at least against my skin. And it’s less shimmery in direct light, as can be seen in the photos below. The initial swatch made me think of Patina as well but Patina is a taupe with gold pearl and is nothing like Rose Popillia (30).

ETK Intense in Rose Popillia (30) is definitely one of my must have items from the Fall 2013 collection and I have a feeling this shade will fly off the shelves faster than the others. Hats off to you, Mr. Armani for creating such a unique, versatile shade in an amazing formula. You just can’t go wrong.
