I must line my waterline with a dark eyeliner, usually a black eyeliner. It’s my desert island product. My face just doesn’t look awake without it. For daily use, I don’t mind using something that fades a little because it actually gives a very natural (for me) look and I can always just touch up. But for when I’m dressing up and want my makeup to stay put, Giorgio Armani Waterproof Smooth Silk Eye Pencil in Black has been go-to eyeliner. So when I kept hearing about the L’Oreal Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner, I was intrigued because the texture and lasting power sounded very similar to the Armani eyeliner and since L’Oreal owns Armani, it wouldn’t be surprising if it was a very similar product.

Here is what I can confirm: the lasting power and texture of these two eyeliners is so close that it’s virtually impossible to tell the difference between the two. Both eyeliners are ridiculously creamy, glide on beautifully, deposit the colour in one swipe and set within a couple of minutes giving you enough time to work with the liner should you wish to do so. Both of these eyeliners are actually great for smudging out. I lined my left waterline with the L’Oreal eyeliner and my right waterline with the Armani eyeliner. Both liners lasted well over 11 hours, albeit with the tiniest bit of fading in the first hour. After the initial fading,  both of the liners stayed put. The only differences that I was able to detect were that the Armani liner is a slightly more intense black and touch softer in texture, but only marginally so. And I only noticed because I was examining the products for differences. Also, the Armani pencil took a bit more work to take off.

Even though both eyeliners have a smudger at the end in the pictures, keep in mind that I own a limited edition version of the Armani liner. This product has now been added to the permanent line but my understanding is that it comes without the smudger. As for the L’Oreal liner, personally, I’m not a fan of the smudger that comes it because it tugs at my skin when I use it. I prefer to just use a brush to smudge me liner.

So the reason I tested these eyeliners for only 11 hours? Turns out I’m allergic to something in them. Bummer, indeed. In hindsight, every time I have worn the Armani liner, my eyes have felt really tired but I always assumed it was because I was tired or getting too old to be staying out so late and just needed some sleep. Nope – just allergic to the eyeliner. It never occurred to me that the culprit could be my wonderful, expensive, longlasting eyeliner. Within a couple of hours of trying these out during the day, my eyes were insanely bloodshot, felt extremely tired and the longer I wore the eyeliners, my eyelids started to swell up and I started to develop a headache. The oddest thing, however, was that despite all this, my eyes didn’t water – instead, my nose started watering…. uhhh… yeah… I don’t know what that was about either. When it got to a stage that I couldn’t justify torturing myself for sake of the blog post, I just took off the eyeliner. And within 15 minutes of taking it off, my eyes started feeling better, headache started to disappear and my nose stopped running. SO WEIRD! Has this ever happened to anyone else?!

I can’t speak to how well these liners last on the lids because I just couldn’t bring myself to go through that again but I imagine it would last pretty well considering how well they both lasted on the waterline.

So the good news is that I really do think both the Giorgio Armani Waterproof Smooth Silk Eye Pencil Armani and L’Oreal Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner essentially have the exact same formula. The fact that both of my eyes had the same reaction to the different products serves to convince me of that fact even more. If you’re wondering which one to buy, assuming your body can handle it, I can wholeheartedly recommend L’Oreal’s offering since it’s almost one-third of the price of the Giorgio Armani, you get almost the same amount of product (Armani has 1.2 grams of product while the L’Oreal has 1.1 grams) and performs exactly the same.

Please let me know in the comments if you would like to see more comparisons between similar higher and lower end products and I shall do my best to oblige!
